Hello Reader !

There's a place in Utah where the terrain looks like the surface of the moon.

At least... that's what the legends promised.

Had to see it for myself.

Pre-planned. Check.

Packed gear. Check.

Filled Yeti with food. Check.

Drove 1,798 miles to the Moonscape Overlook. Check.

Yes, "Moonscape" is the ACTUAL name of the location!

Parked… far away from the ledge. Check.

Grabbed gear. Check.

Walked 5 feet from the edge. Check.

Jaw dropped to the valley below. Check.

I was in AWE!

An… OMG moment!

Unbelievable. Astounding. BREATHTAKING.

It looked like the surface of the moon.

Ok, saw it and now I can drive home now. NOT!

HOW INCREDIBLE IS THAT!

And here's the cool part… this was in the MIDDLE OF THE AFTERNOON!

Couldn't wait for sunset and sunrise!

And this proves that the right light can strike in the afternoon… it all depends on your subject and creative vision.

Harsh light OWNED this place perfectly.

But, so did the low angle of the sun… carving long shadows that stretched across the landscape later in the day…

But, the afternoon light wasn't ideal for this next photo.

I kept it more as a reminder… this is EXACTLY where I want to stand for sunrise…

…which would hopefully explode across the sky the following morning.

Until then, I had to settle for the setting sun… but I wasn't disappointed.

Mother Nature unleashed a light show…

And using the light to your advantage or your creative vision makes all the difference between ordinary and EXTRAORDINARY.

I waited for the light, or the sun, to sink low to the horizon, and then the shadows SWALLOWED my "star" (hero, subject) in darkness and lit a small sliver for pure drama.

Here's another intimate scene where I used light to "sculpt" my vision…

More dramatic.

More interesting.

More Dynamic.

Wouldn't you agree?

But when the light isn't ideal… like here…

…you can transform it, easily, by eliminating the sky and focusing on the colors, textures, lines, and more of what's TRULY captivating…

It is all part of the journey.

You show up.

You work with what you are given.

You shape the light when you can… and adapt when you cannot.

And sometimes, the most surprising part is how the landscape REWARDS you for sticking around a little longer.

Landscape photography is like a box of chocolates.

You never know what you are going to get… until you slow down, look closer, and watch Mother Nature reveal her secrets.
