Hello Reader !

Straight out of high-school in 1989… I had one dream…

…to become a pro photographer.

But dreams didn’t pay the bills.

Three years later, I found myself behind the counter at a local camera store.

Not exactly my dream…

…but still close enough to keep the fire alive.

On my first weekend off, I headed to Sedona for a little hiking… camera in hand.

And captured what I thought were breathtaking shots.

When my 4x6 proofs arrived a week later, I was elated.

“These are amazing!” I thought, showing them proudly to a co-worker.

But his reaction crushed me…

“Your photos are awful,” he said.

My stomach dropped.

My heart raced.

I wanted to defend myself, but deep down, I wondered…

…was he right?

Photography Isn’t Always Easy

If you’ve ever put your heart into a photo only to feel disappointed… or crushed by criticism… you’re not alone.

We create because we’re driven to it.

But let’s be honest, photography doesn’t always go as planned:

  1. Over or underexposed shots.
  2. Blurry subjects.
  3. Compositions that just feel… off.

And then there’s the internet… the wild west of opinions.

Negative feedback from trolls or even friends can sting.

Been there. Felt that.

For years, I struggled to create photos worth remembering.

But here’s the thing: Being a great photographer isn’t something you’re born with.

It’s something you can learn.

My Journey from “Awful” to Awesome

When I was 17, I maxed out my credit card on a Nikon n8008 and two zoom lenses.

A $2,000 investment when I was earning just $3.35 an hour.

I barely had enough money for gas, let alone film and processing.

And when I developed my first roll?

Most of the photos were blurry.

Overexposed.

Awful.

I wanted to quit.

But the camera store clerk handed me a book: Langford’s Basic Photography.

That moment changed everything.

I committed to learning, practicing, and improving.

Over the years, I discovered one simple truth…

…great photos don’t come from great gear.

They come from the person behind the camera.

And it starts with mastering the…

The 4 Keys to Photography

Here are the foundational pillars that transformed my photography—and they can transform yours too:

  1. Know Thy Camera: Master your camera’s settings: aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. Practice in manual mode to see how these affect light and exposure. Confidence with your gear is the first step.
  2. Understand Light: Light is the secret sauce of every great photo. Learn its four characteristics and three behaviors. Experiment by shooting the same subject at different times of day and under different lighting conditions. Light changes everything.
  3. Master Composition: Arrange elements in your frame for maximum impact. Leading lines, symmetry, and negative space can transform an ordinary shot into something unforgettable.
  4. Editing Basics: Editing isn’t cheating—it’s enhancing. Free tools like Snapseed or paid ones like Lightroom can help you bring your creative vision to life. Start small, and watch your photos transform.

Start Small, Build Confidence

Learning photography isn’t about mastering everything overnight.

It’s about focusing on these 4 Keys, practicing consistently, and building your confidence one photo at a time.

Parker Photographic Insiders Photography + Editing tips Hello Reader ! Patterns in photography make people happy! And they can make you a better photographer, too. Let me explain. What’s your favorite song? You don’t even have to think… …it just lights you up, right? That’s because music triggers dopamine… your brain’s feel-good neurotransmitter. Patterns in photography work the same way, activating your brain’s reward system by creating a sense of order and satisfaction. That’s why our eyes...

Parker Photographic Insiders Photography + Editing tips Hello Reader ! Imagine this… … you're trapped. Behind you, gators. In front, a herd of wild buffalo. To your left, a marsh that might as well be a nest of snakes. And to your right, a forest blocked by barbed wire. There’s no escape! Your heart’s racing. But you think, "If I can nail this shot, it’ll be worth it… maybe." Well, that was the situation I found myself in one day last spring. So, I only had one choice… …create photos of the...

Parker Photographic Insiders Photography + Editing tips Hello Reader ! I have a confession to make. Even after 35 years of photography, I still second-guess my shutter speed choices. Too fast, and I lose the beautiful motion blur I wanted. Too slow, and the subject isn’t as tack-sharp as I’d like. Sound familiar? At first, I thought shutter speed was just about technical precision—following a formula to get the “right” setting. And while that’s partly true… The real challenge is knowing what...
